Know about Dhanteras

Diwali is a 5-day feast. The most beautiful festival of the Hindus starts with Dhanteras. It is the first day. Traditionally, people worship Goddess Lakshmi as she is the Goddess for prosperity.

Dhanteras is also known as Dhanatrayodashi and Dhanvantari

Let us go deep into where the word Dhanteras derived from. It is a combination of two words- Dhan. Known as wealth and Teras, which is number 13 and represents the 13th day of Krishna Paksha, Lunar month Kartik.

It is considered blissful to buy ornaments this day. Irrespective of the status and richness, Hindus make sure that they buy something for their house, be it a piece of heavy gold jewellery or simply a spoon set. The feeling behind this is, purchasing such things on this day brings health, wealth and happiness.

Komal from Rohini says we make sure that we buy anything on Dhanteras. I don’t know the logic is correct or not but as a Hindu, I must follow rituals, and I love to do. Whatever things we buy, we keep that in Diwali Puja and then start using it.

Acharya says…

According to Acharya Bipin, people may also start renovating their houses from this day. Goddess Lakshmi will bless them it is believed. Rangoli can be made for welcoming Goddess Lakshmi. It would be great if we stick or paint footprints of Goddess Lakshmi from our door to the house temple. In the evening, worshipping Dhanvantari and Lakshmi is said to be divine.
